Every August, the streets and riverfront of Vevay, Indiana, come alive with music, food, wine, and thousands of visitors celebrating one of Switzerland County’s most cherished traditions: the Swiss Wine Festival. What began as a small community celebration has grown into a four-day festival that brings people together to celebrate the area’s history, heritage, and hometown spirit.
The story of the Swiss Wine Festival goes back more than 200 years, when Swiss immigrants settled along the Ohio River and brought their winemaking traditions with them. One of the most influential was John James Dufour, who established a vineyard in the area in the early 1800s. His efforts helped make Switzerland County home to what is widely recognized as the first successful commercial winemaking operation in the United States.
The town of Vevay takes its name from Vevey, Switzerland, reflecting the community’s strong Swiss roots. That heritage, along with the area's long history of winemaking, would eventually inspire a festival that continues to celebrate those traditions today.
The idea for the Swiss Wine Festival grew out of Vevay’s sesquicentennial celebration in 1963. Inspired by the success of the anniversary festivities, local resident Mike Danner envisioned an annual event that would celebrate the community and bring people back to Switzerland County year after year.
After several years of planning and community involvement, the first Swiss Wine Festival was held in 1968. The early celebration featured a variety of activities, including grape stomping, a flea market, food, entertainment, and events that reflected the area’s Swiss heritage.
Local businesses, volunteers, and community organizations played an important role in making the festival a success. Their hard work helped establish a tradition that would continue for generations.
Like many successful community events, the Swiss Wine Festival changed over the years. After its initial run ended in the mid-1970s, the festival returned in 1979 as the Swiss Alpine Festival, placing an emphasis on family activities and entertainment. The Swiss Wine Festival name returned in the 1990s as the event continued to evolve.
As the festival grew, organizers eventually moved it from downtown Vevay to Paul Ogle Riverfront Park. The new location offered more room for attractions, vendors, entertainment, and visitors, while providing a beautiful setting along the Ohio River.
The move helped shape the festival into the event visitors know today, combining a scenic riverfront location with a full weekend of activities for all ages.
Today, the Swiss Wine Festival is one of Indiana’s most recognizable summer festivals, drawing visitors from throughout southeastern Indiana, northern Kentucky, the Cincinnati area, and beyond.
The four-day celebration features Indiana wines, the popular Grape Stomp, a Grand Festival Parade, live music, carnival rides, food vendors, arts and crafts, and family-friendly entertainment. Each year brings something new, while many favorite traditions remain at the heart of the event.
The festival also gives local businesses, community organizations, and volunteers an opportunity to come together and showcase what makes Switzerland County such a special place to visit and call home.
The Swiss Wine Festival is about more than wine and entertainment. It is a celebration of the people, history, and traditions that have shaped Vevay and Switzerland County for generations.
From its beginnings in 1968 to the thousands of visitors who gather along the Ohio River today, the festival has remained a source of community pride. It brings families together, welcomes returning visitors, and introduces new generations to the area's unique Swiss heritage.
Each August, the tradition continues at Paul Ogle Riverfront Park, where the sights, sounds, and flavors of the Swiss Wine Festival offer visitors a chance to experience the welcoming spirit of Vevay and discover what makes Switzerland County a special destination.
