The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will touch each of Indiana’s 92 counties during the 2,300 mile journey across the state. The torch relay route showcases locations of natural beauty, local interest and/or historic significance to the state. It will start in September 2016 in Corydon, Indiana’s first state capitol, and culminate with a celebration in October on the statehouse grounds in Indianapolis. Handling of Torch The torch relay will be in Switzerland County on Saturday, September 17. Accompanying the torch will be a mobile visitor center serving as an interactive museum, which will be open to the public from 9am – noon. It’s exhibits highlight important milestones during Indiana’s first 200 years. A torch is the centerpiece of our state flag, representing liberty, enlightenment and Indiana’s far reaching influence. The Switzerland County torch relay will begin in Vevay, travel north on State Road 56, and end in East Enterprise. The torch itself is being designed by engineering faculty and students at Purdue University. It will be primarily transported by individual people, passing the flame from torch bearer to torch bearer. Rural Heritage Tour
The Sleepy Hollow Fall Celebration will take place the Saturday, October 15, 2016. Join us for family-oriented fun around the historic Switzerland County Courthouse Square and on Liberty Street. The fall leaves at the courthouse and the town’s decorations help showcase Sleepy Hollow as one of Switzerland County’s favorite annual events. Attractions Enjoy arts and crafts, demonstrations, the “friendly” Headless Horseman, horse drawn wagon rides, and live entertainment. There will also be a bale throwing contest (men and women), a needle in a haystack search (youth), plus a pumpkin & apple pie baking contest, Live band music plays from 10am till 4pm, usually bluegrass, cajun or country. Bring a camera because there will be plenty of memories in the making! Vendor Space Arts and crafts vendor space is available on a first come, first serve basis by pre-registration at the Switzerland County Visitors Center. Handmade arts & crafts only! (No flea market or commercial items please). Table space is 10′ wide and 6′ deep and is available along the courthouse fence.
