What started as a challenge to myself has become one of the most enjoyable and creative outlets in my life. I am a self taught stained glass artist who has been working in this beautiful medium since 1998. I’ve created many of my own designs and use others I find to be inspirational. There is an emotional connection – a passion – for creating art in glass. All pieces are individually hand cut and I use the copper foil method exclusively. I also enjoy making a piece look 3-D. I like to see the detail and definition in each piece of glass. The colors, textures and variations tend to inspire and motivate. Each project is truly one of a kind because no two pieces of glass are alike. I’ve learned decorative soldering along the way and like to add it to my glass whenever I can. I have some beautiful plates, vases and picture frames all made with decorative soldering. Each one is truly unique. From 2005 to 2009, I had the opportunity to design and create medallions for the wineries participating in the Swiss Wine Festival here in Vevay, The wineries are very proud of their medals made exclusively for […]

Bonnie Peugeot
ArtistBonnie Peugeot has been painting since she was a little girl and feels that the act of painting is a sharing, an imparting of her soul to others through visual art. Her medium of choice is oil, but she is very versatile in her expression and also has a passion for mono-printing as well as chalk pastels on velvet paper. For Bonnie, it is the love of color that drives her passion to paint, “Color, to me, creates such mood and emotion which it then evokes from the viewer.” The majority of Bonnie’s paintings are traditional Flemish style with vague delineation of paintbrush strokes. She also has done a few impressionist style paintings and very unique acrylic abstract mixed media paintings. For Bonnie, it’s more about feeling free in her work and the color of having its own purity and expression. Throughout the early 1980’s, Bonnie was a regular exhibitor in the Madison Chautauqua Art Festival, and established her own art gallery in Madison from 1996 to 1998. Currently, Bonnie’s paintings are in collections at Oakland City University and England. Bonnie has a double major –in Art and in Education. She first attended Oakland City University for her undergraduate studies […]

Artisan Jewelry, Lapidary, Smithing, Wire Wrapping“I am a lapidarian jewelry artist. I take stones and rocks, cut them and bring them from rough rock all the way to finished jewelry pieces. A lot of times there will be an image, color or texture that just grabs me and that just leads me through the piece. You don’t really have typical pieces, because every stone is different. There are a lot variables in there that you have to consider when looking at a handmade piece like that.”

I like to wear jewelry that is colorful, with interesting shapes and textures. I began making earrings and necklaces about 13 years ago using gemstones, glass, crystals and pearls. Then I discovered polymer clay beads at a bead store. Polymer clay is a man-made, clay-like medium which comes in a variety of beautiful colors. The blocks of clay can be mixed into an infinite number of colors, tints and shades. It can be molded, carved, sanded, textured and combined in a myriad ways to make amazing shapes and designs. During the last 7 years, I have been constantly inspired to try new techniques with polymer to create pendants and beads for my necklaces and earrings. Many necklaces I make today include my own handmade polymer clay beads. I am a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in Indiana, New York State, Singapore, Libya, Japan and Kuwait. My husband and I live near Florence, Indiana, overlooking the beautiful Ohio River. We enjoy gardening, traveling in our RV, and cruising on the waterways of the eastern United States aboard our trawler.

Jay Benzing
Watercolour PaintingsThe nature of watercolor painting seems to lend itself to portraying old, weathered buildings in harmony with their natural settings. There is a beautiful simplicity in architecture created for utilitarian purpose whether it is an old barn or lighthouse. They were built to withstand the elements like sentinels watching the march of time. Jay likes to record their presence before they succumb to nature or man, and to share that special feeling and emotion that can be felt when light touches a scene in a magical way. Jay Benzing grew up not far from the ocean in New York as part of a family that considered art a part of everyday life. He found encouragement from his father who loved to oil paint and his High School art teacher who was also an accomplished Madison Avenue artist. Jay majored in art education at Morehead State then taught art in Boone Co., Ky for 30 years. Upon retirement Jay and his wife Wanda moved to South East Indiana to be closer to his subject matter…and the water. Jay is a member of the Madison Art Club and Gallery and the KY Watercolor Society. His watercolors are available at River House Studio […]

Ken & Joyce Benbow
Mixed Media, Found Objects Assemblages, & CollageKen was influenced early in life by his father, a talented designer in advertising and a skilled woodworker. As a teen, Ken was employed in a sign shop and, related to his love of cars, became well-known for his ability to do pin-striping and flame painting on customized cars and motorcycles. After attending Ball State (at the time “Teachers’ College”) as an Industrial Arts major and Art minor, he was hired by a Muncie corrugated container company as a package designer. He retired in 2003, after 37 years in the packaging business, as a Senior Designer for Inland Container Company in Indianapolis. Joyce, a retired high school art educator, considers herself an artist/designer. She embraces the challenge of using post-consumer waste (used, discarded and found objects) as her medium to create witty and somewhat provocative works of art in both two and three dimensions. Her assemblages, collages, and mixed-media drawings reflect her sense of humor as well as her multi-media background as an art educator. Active in historic preservation, Joyce and her husband, Ken, have restored two nineteenth-century houses in National Register Historic Districts. In retirement they “reinvented” themselves as “Sam and Izzy”, dealers in antiques and uniques. The “Uniques” […]

Lewis “Lou”Cougill
Country WoodturnerI am a farmer in South Eastern Indiana. I raise and show donkeys in the summer. In the winter, I don’t have much farm work, so I started turning wood. I started by making Christmas gifts, on a small cheap wood lathe. I made pen, bottle stoppers, and bracelets and Christmas decorations. I now have a good large lathe and turn every free moment I have. I make bowls of all kinds, vases, plates and platters, and one of a kind art. I love wood. Every tree is different and each piece of wood from the tree is different. There is a lot of character in every piece especially the crotch or where limbs fork off. I start with green or “wet” wood, turn it to shape and let it dry for 2-6 months and then turn to size, sand and finish. When I turn a bowl or vessel, I let the wood character show. I leave knots, holes, bark and repair cracks. A wood bowl is like furniture in your house, it shrinks when it is dry and swells when the humidity is high. That is why a lot of hand turned wood bowls have a wavy rim. If […]

Melodee Stepleton
Fiber Arts. Weaving and Hand Dyed Scarves.Sitting in and old, brick farmhouse overlooking the Ohio River, Melodee Stepleton quietly works as a five-foot-tall spinning wheel whirls in front of her. Other nights, her loom rhythmically thumps as the percussion intermixes with the crickets chirping outside. For Melodee, spinning, weaving and other fiber crafts are more than just a hobby. It is a way to connect with an age-old tradition. And, by creating her own pieces and demonstrating how it is done, she sees it as a way of keeping the centuries-old processes alive. In fact, her passion came from a connection to local history. “I got into weaving originally because my first loom came out of the family house in Vevay,” she said of how she wanted to learn to use the loom that came from the grandmother of her husband, Rob. “It started with weaving, and then Iearned natural dyeing, and then I got into spinning.” It was natural progression for Melodee. “I always was working with my hands, for as long as can remember. My grandma taught me how to crochet.” She extended that interest into weaving, spinning and dyeing in the early 1970’s by taking as many classes as she could. “I found […]

I love to be outdoors and paint the colors of spring and fall along the streams of Southeastern Indiana. As a small boy climbing the hills, wading the creeks was a real delight. The colors of the seasons jumping out, the smells of freshness. I try to capture the thoughts of being there once more. My self portrait of cooling off after a hot day on the Amazon, the jungle heat brings out the thirst deep inside of you. I enjoyed the challenge of this picture in painting the tables & chairs with the desk floor background and the memories of it brought back of the excitement of the Amazon.

The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This French-Swiss cottage is one of the few remaining examples of French colonial architecture that characterized the early settlement of Switzerland County. In 1805, a French-speaking Swiss, Louis Gex Obousser, bought 319 acres along the Ohio River; a portion of that property is what we now call Musee de Venoge. The house is posts-on-sill, timber frame, mortise-joined and wood-pegged. Brick nogging insulation supports the first-floor plaster; rare hand-split accordion lath supports the second floor. An exterior stair leads to the second-floor storage and sleeping rooms. Letters were found written by Jacob Weaver, who in 1813 traveled to the Swiss settlement of New ‘Swisserland’, then in Indiana Territory in 1813. They tell of the journey and life with his young Swiss wife, Charlotte Golay and their small children. They moved to the Venoge site in 1828 with seven of their 10 children. The letters help us interpret the material culture of the early French-Swiss settlers with domestic arts, hearth cooking, and trades. The kitchen garden features plants common in the early 19th century. The outdoor bake oven is used and cooking on the hearth is done in the summer when […]

KYLE HOUSE The first hotel built on this site was known as the Kyle House. George Harrison Kyle took possession of the lot in 1853 from the International Order of Odd Fellows. He was an architect and builder and must have built the original hotel. It was destroyed by fire (date unknown) and was rebuilt by Thomas Delaney, who had bought the property in 1884. An impressive brick house, it then became known as “The Delaney House.” DELANEY HOUSE Delaney was an old Irishman. He came from Ireland as a hod carrier. “The hotel had an oil lamp in every room and had 22 regular boarders – the courthouse men, some school workers and lots of traveling men. They would display their goods in the sample room. There were lots of draymen who pulled wagons to and from the river. Storekeepers from all the country stores and from Ghent, Carrollton and Warsaw, Kentucky came to pick up goods.” PHOENIX HOTEL By 1898 the place was known as “The Phoenix Hotel,” because it had risen from the ashes. “There are thirty-two guest rooms, hot and cold water baths, is lighted by electricity and heated throughout by furnace. The culinary department and […]

Oil Paintings, Mixed Media and Steampunk ArtI was born in 1953 and grew up in the Beautiful Rolling hills and farmlands of rural Indiana. I am largely a self-taught oil painter. Oil painting is a medium I have grown even more fond of over the years. In my earlier years, most of my creative work consisted of the use of metal sculpture, pottery, watercolor, pen & ink and many other mediums, in which I had some formal training. I also completed two years of instruction in Commercial Art. I have had exhibits in Southern Indiana & Kentucky. After some time of having my own studio and small gallery at the Mellwood Art Center in Louisville, I completed a larger studio on my own property in Elizabeth, Indiana, where I now do most of my work. I think my Landscape paintings are a reflection of those earlier years in rural Indiana. Most are serene and remind me of those carefree years of growing up there. However, in recent years, I have added still life and abstracts to my creative palate.
